Microbiology is essentially involved with the diagnosis of infectious diseases as well as the infections complicating any procedure /surgery.  Bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites cause infectious diseases. Clinical samples like blood, urine, stool, sputum, pericardial fluid, cerebrospinal fluid etc are collected from patients with infections. Batteries of tests are carried out on these samples to determine the causative agents of the disease. Consequently, yet another series of tests identifies the antibiotics that will be most effective in treatment of that particular infection.

In addition, the Department of Microbiology also carries out tests to help diagnose immunological disorders that may occur either by themselves or in association with other diseases.

The department participates in an External Quality Assurance Program run at a national level by the Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists. This assures excellent quality of services.
